Profile: The Alex Community Food Centre, Calgary
“The Community Food Centre movement isn’t just about food. It’s about poverty, it’s about community as we’ve seen today… and I’m so thrilled The Alex CFC and so many others are coming together to do this work.”
– Naheed Nenshi, Mayor of Calgary
The Alex Community Food Centre recently marked their second anniversary in the Forest Lawn community. With bustling community kitchen and gardening programs, a youth social justice club, a weekly affordable produce market, FoodFit, a healthy eating and exercise program, and more, there are so many ways community members in Calgary are coming together to grow, cook, share, and advocate for better food access for all. One great example is the youth social justice club’s #HungryforChange event, where local youth organized and hosted a dinner for the community and candidates in the city’s upcoming mayoral election to talk about issues of food access, dignity, and sustainability.
